In 2007, DISCOVER held a video contest that challenged people to describe one of the most captivating scientific ideas of our time—string theory—in just two minutes or less. The 50 entries included a wide range of different approaches from different kinds of people. Here we present the eight amazing finalists.

Columbia physicist and popular author Brian Greene chose the official winner, String Ducky, produced by Sandy Chase of New York City.

In the viewer's choice poll, DISCOVERmagazine.com visitors selected The Problem With Math, by the Watson family of Montclair, Virginia.
