OFFICIAL RULES


  1. NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR TO WIN. A PURCHASE WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL AND MUNICIPAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS APPLY. VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

  2. Eligibility. Subject to the additional restrictions below, the Discover Magazine 20 Things You Didn't Know About Everything Book Giveaway (the "Giveaway") is open to residents of the 50 United States and D.C. who are eighteen (18) years of age or older at time of entry and to residents of Canada (excluding Quebec) who have reached the age of majority in their province of residence at time of entry. The children and legal dependents of employees of Discover Magazine ("Sponsor"), any of its affiliated companies, or any of their respective advertising and promotional agencies, or of the immediate family members of, or any persons domiciled with, any such employees, are not eligible to enter or to win. The term "immediate family members" includes spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and grandchildren.

  3. How To Enter. The Giveaway will begin on March 17, 2008 and end on April 5, 2008 (the "Giveaway Period"). The Giveaway will consist of separate daily entry periods, starting at 12:00 am E.T. and ending at 11:59 p.m. E.T. each day during the Giveaway Period. One winner will be selected each day, as further described in Section 4, below. You may submit an entry for each day of the Giveaway Period, but only one (1) entry per person is permitted per day. To enter the Giveaway, visit www.discovermagazine.com, look for the Giveaway prompt or ad, and click on the prompt or ad to reach the Giveaway entry page. On the Giveaway entry page, entrants will need to answer all 20 multiple-choice questions relating to editorial content that appears on the discovermagazine.com website. Entrants must also enter their first and last name, mailing address, e-mail address and daytime telephone number in the spaces provided, and follow all instructions for submitting their entry. One winner will be selected each day based on the most number of questions answered correctly, as further described in Section 4, below. The use of software or other automated process to submit entries is prohibited, and any entries submitted by such means will be disqualified. Sponsor will not be responsible for incomplete entries or for failure to receive entries due to transmission failures or technical failures of any kind, including, without limitation, malfunctioning of any network, hardware or software, whether originating with sender or Sponsor.

  4. Winner Selection. Each day of the Giveaway Period, Sponsor will review all entries received that day and the entry that has the most questions answered correctly will be declared a winner. In case of a tie, one winner will be selected in a random drawing from among all tied entries. The entry pool for each day of the Giveaway Period will consist of entries received between 12:00 am and 11:59 pm Eastern Time that day. Sponsor will select one (1) daily winner ("Winner") for each day of the Giveaway Period for a total of twenty (20) Winners selected in the Giveaway.

  5. Prize Description. Each Winner will receive one (1) copy of the book 20 Things You Didn't Know About Everything (retail value: $16.95 US / $16.48 CDN, based on current U.S. exchange rate on February 28, 2008).

  6. Winner Notification and Acceptance. Winners' names will be posted on the discovermagazine.com website during the Giveaway Period, but each Winner also will be officially notified on or about April 6, 2008 at the telephone number, e-mail address and / or mailing address provided on his or her entry form. Sponsor's inability to reach a Winner and/or the return of any notification as undeliverable may, at the sole discretion of Sponsor, result in the disqualification of such Winner. Each Winner may waive his or her right to receive a prize. Prizes are nonassignable and nontransferable. No substitutions allowed by any Winner. Prizes and individual components of prize packages are subject to availability and Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value. Winners are solely responsible for reporting and payment of any taxes on prizes. Prizes not won and claimed by eligible winners in accordance with these Official Rules will not be awarded and will remain the property of Sponsor.

  7. Requirements for Canadian Winners. A Canadian Winner, in order to win and receive a prize, must first correctly answer, unaided and without mechanical or electronic assistance, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question administered by telephone. Failure of a Canadian Winner to correctly answer the skill-testing question in the time allotted will result in disqualification, the forfeiture of his or her interest in the prize, and the random selection of a substitute Winner from among all remaining eligible entries. Sponsor will attempt to contact a Canadian Winner only once by telephone during regular business hours at the number provided on the Winner's entry form. If Sponsor is unable to reach a Canadian Winner personally by telephone (Sponsor will call only once during regular business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and no messages will be left), that Winner will be disqualified and a substitute winner may be selected from the remaining eligible entries.

  8. Conditions of Participation. By participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor and the Giveaway judges appointed by Sponsor. Entrants also acknowledge and agree that the Sponsor and its subsidiaries and affiliates, and the officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of the foregoing companies, will not be liable for losses or injuries of any kind resulting from participation in the Giveaway, acceptance/possession/use and/or misuse of prize(s), the theft of prizes or mail, printing, mailing or distribution errors, or any malfunctions of the telephone network, computer Internet system, computer dating mechanism, computer equipment, software, or any combination thereof. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify persons found tampering with or otherwise abusing any aspect of this Giveaway as solely determined by Sponsor. In the event the Giveaway is compromised by tampering or other causes beyond the reasonable control of Sponsor which corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness or proper operation of the Giveaway, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to suspend, modify or terminate the Giveaway. Should the Giveaway be terminated prior to the stated expiration date, Sponsor reserves the right to select Winners based on the entries received before the termination date. Unless prohibited by law, acceptance of a prize constitutes by a Winner constitutes that Winner's permission for Sponsor to use the Winner's name, address (city and state/province) and/or likeness for advertising and trade purposes without further compensation, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known and hereafter devised, including without limitation the Internet.

  9. Construction. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules shall not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event that any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein.

  10. Sponsor. The Discover Magazine Book Giveaway is sponsored by Discover Magazine. The decisions of Sponsor and the Giveaway judges regarding the selection of the Winners and all other aspects of the Giveaway shall be final and binding in all respects. Sponsor will not be responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Rules or in other materials relating to the Giveaway. The names of the Winners will be posted on discovermagazine.com as the Winners are selected.
