<p>is the winner of DISCOVER's cover illustration contest. An eighth grader at Canton Middle School in Canton, Connecticut, Christina plans to be a psychiatrist when she grows up. "I want to learn how people interpret the world," she says. DISCOVER chose Christina's artwork out of more than 400 entries from third through eighth graders across the United States. We received so many excellent submissions that we decided to feature the art of these up-and-comers throughout the magazine.</p><p><img src="http://discovermagazine.com/2007/oct/cover-contest-finalists/nicholas.jpg" /></p>

<p>loves thrill rides and wants to become a roller-coaster engineer. A sixth grader at Hammarskjold Middle School in East Brunswick, New Jersey, he says his favorite subject is science. "I like that you get to do hands-on stuff and not just sit and listen."</p><p><img src="http://discovermagazine.com/2007/oct/cover-contest-finalists/8.jpg" /></p>

<p>a seventh grader at New Explorations Into Science, Technology, and Math in New York City, says, "I believe that there's a lot of things that we don't see on planet Earth." In the future, with new technology, he says, "we can see much, much deeper--way past our imagination, maybe even the impossible." <p>Artek's twin brother Bartosz Chodor, also a seventh grader at New Explorations Into Science, Technology, and Math in New York City, wants to become an inventor "to help save Earth from global warming." <p>an eighth grader at Canton Middle School in Canton, Connecticut, plays hockey and tends to her household's mini-menagerie. <p>a sixth grader at W. S. Mount Elementary School in Stony Brook, New York, tried to include every aspect of science in her drawing, from Einstein and evolution to brains and bombs. <p>a seventh grader at Eisenhower Middle School in Kansas City, Kansas, predicts that "a time will come when you will have to pay a lot of money to go into space." <p>an eighth grader at Robert R. Lazar Middle School in Montville, New Jersey, explains, "I thought of the United States and science and just put it together." An experienced frog dissector, she "liked seeing everything inside its body and seeing what it just ate." <p>a sixth grader at R. H. Brown Middle School in Madison, Connecticut, says, "We learned about the biotic and abiotic worlds in science, but biotic is more interesting because it's living." <p>a sixth grader at Hammarskjold Middle School in East Brunswick, New Jersey, hopes to be an architect someday, but he enjoys a little astronomy too. <p>a seventh grader at Pinelands Regional Junior High School in Tuckerton, New Jersey, is an avid student of math and science. <p>an eighth grader at Canton Middle School in Canton, Connecticut, is an aspiring novelist. <p>a seventh grader at the Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, wants to be a doctor. She says the human portrayed in her drawing faces a dilemma. "The intelligent design people are pushing against evolution, and the scientists are pushing toward evolution," she explains, "so he's not sure which way to go."</p><p><img src="http://discovermagazine.com/2007/oct/cover-contest-finalists/1.jpg" /></p>
