The Dr. Who Trivia Quiz Sweepstakes

Official Rules

NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR TO WIN.  A PURCHASE WILL NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. ALL FEDERAL, STATE, LOCAL AND MUNICIPAL LAWS AND REGULATIONS APPLY.  VOID WHERE PROHIBITED.

1.    Eligibility:  Subject to the additional restrictions below, the Dr. Who Trivia Quiz Sweepstakes (the “Sweepstakes”) is open to residents of the 50 United States and D.C. who are eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry and to residents of Canada (excluding Quebec) who have reached the age of majority in their province of residence at the time of entry. Employees of Discover Media LLC (“Sponsor”) or of BBC Worldwide Americas, Inc (“BBCWA”), or of any of their respective affiliated companies or advertising and promotional agencies, and the immediate family members of, and any persons domiciled with, any such employees, are not eligible to enter or to win.  The term “immediate family members” includes spouses, parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and grandchildren.

2.    How To Enter:  The Sweepstakes will begin at 12:00:00 am ET on November 17, 2008 and will end at 11:59:59 pm ET on December 1, 2008 (the “Sweepstakes Period”).  To enter, visit http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/badastronomy/ or http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/sciencenotfiction/ during the Sweepstakes Period, click on the Dr. Who Trivia Quiz Sweepstakes prompt, complete the short Dr. Who trivia quiz, and complete all other information and follow all posted instructions to submit your quiz answers and entry.  You do not have to answer all quiz questions correctly to be entered into the drawing.  Only 1 entry per day per person.  The use of software or other automated process to submit entries is prohibited, and any entries submitted by such means will be disqualified.  Sponsor will not be responsible for incomplete, lost or late entries or for failure to receive entries due to transmission failures or technical failures of any kind, including, without limitation, malfunctioning of any network, hardware or software.  All entries become property of Sponsor and none will be returned.  Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any entries by persons determined to be tampering with or abusing any aspect of the Sweepstakes.  By entering the Sweepstakes, you agree that the personal information submitted with your entry may be used by Sponsor in accordance with the terms of its privacy policy (available at http://www.discover.com/privacy-policy/) and also may be used by BBCWA in accordance with the terms of its privacy policy (available at http://www.bbcamericashop.com/help/privacy-notice_us.html).

3.    Winner Selection:  On or about December 2, 2008 Sponsor will select ten (10) Sweepstakes winners in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received during the Sweepstakes Period.  

4.    Prizes and Odds:  Each of the ten (10) winners will receive one (1) copy of Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series (retail value: $99.98) and one (1) Sonic Screwdriver LED Torch (retail value: $12.98).  The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received.

5.    Winner Notification and Acceptance:  Each winner will be notified on or about December 2, 2008 at the telephone number, email address and/or mailing address provided on his or her entry form.  Winners must respond to prize notification within 72 hours.  Sponsor’s inability to reach a winner, a winner’s failure to timely respond to prize notification, the return of any prize notification as undeliverable and/or a winner’s failure to comply with any term or condition of these Official Rules may, at the sole discretion of Sponsor, result in the disqualification of such winner and the award of the prize to a substitute winner selected from among all remaining eligible entries.  Each winner may waive his or her right to receive a prize.  Prizes are nonassignable and nontransferable.  No substitutions allowed by any winner.  Prizes and individual components of prize packages are subject to availability and Sponsor reserves the right to substitute prizes of equal or greater value.  Winners are solely responsible for reporting and payment of any taxes on prizes.  Prizes not won and claimed by eligible winners in accordance with these Official Rules will not be awarded and will remain the property of Sponsor.

6.    Requirements for Canadian Winners:  A Canadian winner, in order to win and receive a prize, must first correctly answer, unaided and without mechanical or electronic assistance, a time-limited mathematical skill-testing question administered by telephone.  Failure of a Canadian winner to correctly answer the skill-testing question in the time allotted will result in disqualification, the forfeiture of his or her interest in the prize, and the random selection of a substitute winner from among all remaining eligible entries.  Sponsor will attempt to contact a Canadian winner at the number provided on the winner’ s entry form.  If Sponsor is unable to reach a Canadian winner personally by telephone (Sponsor will call only once during regular business hours, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and no messages will be left), or a Canadian winner does not correctly answer the mathematical skill-testing question, that Winner will be disqualified and a substitute winner may be selected from the remaining eligible entries.

7.    Conditions of Participation.  By participating, entrants agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Sponsor.  Entrants also acknowledge and agree that the Sponsor BBCWA and their respective subsidiaries and affiliates, and the officers, directors, employees, agents and representatives of each of the foregoing companies, will not be liable for losses or injuries of any kind resulting from participation in the Sweepstakes, acceptance/possession/use and/or misuse of prize(s), the theft of prizes or mail, printing, mailing or distribution errors, or any malfunctions of the telephone network, computer Internet system, computer dating mechanism, computer equipment, software, or any combination thereof.  Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify persons found tampering with or otherwise abusing any aspect of this Sweepstakes as solely determined by Sponsor.  In the event the Sweepstakes is compromised by tampering or other causes beyond the reasonable control of Sponsor which corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness or proper operation of the Sweepstakes, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to suspend, modify or terminate the Sweepstakes. Should the Sweepstakes be terminated prior to the stated expiration date, Sponsor reserves the right to select winners based on the entries received before the termination date.  Unless prohibited by law, acceptance of a prize by a winner constitutes that winner’s permission for Sponsor and BBCWA to use the winner’s name, address (city and state/province) and/or likeness for advertising and trade purposes without further compensation, worldwide and in perpetuity, in any and all forms of media, now known and hereafter devised, including without limitation the Internet.

8.    Construction. The invalidity or unenforceability of any provision of these Official Rules will not affect the validity or enforceability of any other provision. In the event that any such provision is determined to be invalid or otherwise unenforceable, these rules shall be construed in accordance with their terms as if the invalid or unenforceable provision was not contained therein.

9.    Sponsor. The Dr. Who Trivia Quiz Sweepstakes is sponsored by Discover Media LLC.  The decisions of Sponsor regarding the selection of the winners and all other aspects of the Sweepstakes will be final and binding in all respects.  Sponsor will not be responsible for typographical, printing or other inadvertent errors in these Official Rules or in other materials relating to the Sweepstakes.
