Answer: Earwax

It may not be pretty, but cerumen (commonly known as earwax) serves an important function by keeping the ear canal free of dirt and microbes. It comes in two varieties, dry and wet, and in 2006 Japanese researchers identified a single letter in the genetic code that determines which type a person has.
