In Search of Sanity
For Americans who have wondered, “Am I crazy?” the answer could easily be yes. A study by the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions indicates that nearly 15 percent of adults meet the diagnostic criteria for one or more personality disorders. William Narrow of the American Psychiatry Association suspects survey results were inflated by ambiguous or subjective questions. All the same, he agrees that personality disorders could be more prevalent than previously thought. Treatment lags well behind that for depression or bipolar disorder. Perhaps, he says, the new survey will inspire more research and a better public understanding.
