Michael Abrams, a former Discover production editor, is at work on a book about the quest for human-powered flight, which will be published this year. 

Joseph D’Agnese writes for The New York Times, Saveur, and The Wall Street Journal Europe as well as Discover. Last year he was nominated for the Genesis Award by the Humane Society for a Discover article on laboratory chimps.

Keith Devlin is the executive director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University and a consulting professor in the mathematics department. He is also the author of 24 books and may be best known as the Math Guy on National Public Radio’s “Weekend Edition.”




Claudia Glenn Dowling spent the better part of three decades writing for Life and People magazines, during which she climbed Mount Everest, canoed the Amazon, and interviewed both presidents Bush.

Annette Foglino writes about medicine and women’s health. Her work has appeared in Popular Science, Self, Reader’s Digest, and Good Housekeeping.

Eric Levin is a former editor of special projects at People magazine. He wrote two features for Discover last year, including the June cover story, “Dinosaur Family Values.” He also writes for The New York Times, Travel & Leisure Golf, and Food Arts.

Alison McCook is a freelance writer and former medical journalist at Reuters Health. Her work has also appeared in Scientific American, Popular Science, The Scientist, and The New York Sun.

Matt Ridley is the author of Genome and Nature via Nurture. His books have been translated into 23 languages. He is chairman of the International Centre for Life, a science park and education project in Newcastle, England.

Michael W. Robbins is a writer, former editor in chief of Audubon and Oceans magazines, and the author of The Hiking Companion: Getting the Most From the Trail Experience Throughout the Seasons, published by Storey Books in 2003.

Meredith F. Small is a professor of anthropology at Cornell University. Interested in the intersection of biology and culture, she is writing a book about mental illness, which is scheduled for publication by Tarcher/Penguin in 2005.

Elizabeth Svoboda is a former Discover intern. Her writing has appeared in Popular Science, Britannica.com, the Yale Scientific, and Science & Spirit.

Clive Thompson is a freelance journalist who writes about science and technology. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Boston Globe, Wired, Details, and Psychology Today. Last year he was one of 10 recipients of a Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT.

Jeffrey Winters is an associate editor at Mechanical Engineering who writes for Psychology Today and Popular Science. He is a former senior editor at The Sciences and a former associate editor at Discover.

Barry Yeoman, a freelance writer based in Durham, North Carolina, last wrote for Discover in July about how the living conditions of laboratory mice affect their performance in experiments. He is the winner of a National Magazine Award.
