This clearest-ever view of a sunspot, created by the new Swedish 1-meter Solar Telescope in the Canary Islands, clarifies how magnetic fields shape the sun. A tube of magnetized, relatively cool material (dark area) surges upward and peels apart into smaller tubes; these are sucked down, producing the fringe of outward-pointing lines.
