Black Beauty

The Horsehead nebula, one of the most famous sights in the sky, shows a delicate new beauty in this image from the Very Large Telescope in Chile. A dark lane of dust blocks the pink glow of hydrogen gas energized by hot stars that recently condensed from nearby clouds. Radiation from those stars will erode the dust and destroy this formation within a few millennia.
